3. Juna Tamang
Migration to the cities is rampant in Nepal, with people coming from all over the country in search of jobs, securities and better opportunities. Juna Tamang is one of such women who had come to Kathmandu after her marriage. But unemployment is a huge issue for the country, along with the low wages. People hardly manage to adequately raise a family on a single income and so, unskilled women are often forced to seek out household jobs. Luckily, Juna was able to come into contact with a sewing company with whom she worked with for many years before working with us. She cited the benefits of working with us being our comparatively higher wage and the flexibility we allow to our partners. They can work from the comfort of their own homes, as well are allowed up to a week, to complete their orders. We also offer our partners stable pay, without any of the hassles of having to negotiate. She is proud to be working with us, as she stated her joy for not having to working as a housemaid, as most unskilled people in our country are forced to do. She says that the work she does gives her pride, she is her own boss and work however and whenever she likes. Now, she can also care for her children as well, for which she expressed her gratefulness. Juna is also one of our coordinators. She is the one we give the raw materials off to, organize the other workers and make sure the work is completed on time. She is also in charge of training our newer, inexperienced partners. There are 3 others in her group and they are all her relatives. So it’s fair to say that she is satisfied working with us enough to refer her own contacts to work with us. All of them work from their own homes and have all learned by looking at Juna work.
Our production process, although requiring high manual labor, is a simple process which can be mastered in as little time as a week. Our trainees then proceed to working on turning the raw materials we provide into the final products and sell us the final products at the negotiated price. It is also important to note that all of our partners are women who work from the comfort of their own homes. The process requires no equipment and so there is basically no cost associated for them to become entrepreneurs, and the masters of their own businesses. The products Juna weaves include hand crucute, hand knotted, woven looms and more, which are available in various sizes, patterns and styles at https://www.thirdworldcraft.com/index.php/en/
